HONG KONG, CHINA - Media OutReach[1] - Dec 20, 2017 -Global technology-solutions provider Arrow Electronics announced winners of its inaugural China InnoDesign Contest[2]. Under the theme of "IoT Everywhere", the contest aims to encourage next-gen innovators in the startup, maker, engineer and developer communities to turn their creative ideas into socially impactful IoT solutions that address various smart city, industrial and medical market needs.

Launched in July this year, the contest attracted more than 200 submissions of creative ideas. Ten projects were shortlisted for final presentation to compete for a total of total prize of US$18,000 from Arrow (before tax)Serving as more than just a competition, the contest created a learning and discovery journey for participants to gain a better understanding of the critical building blocks of IoT technology framework. 

 

Contestants demonstrated how to integrate IBM cloud platform, such as artificial intelligence and data analytics into their IoT projects.  Arrow provided contestants with access to technical consultation and development tool resources from Arrow, as well as 14 industry-leading technology companies. 

 

"I'm delighted to see the passion and enthusiasm demonstrated by these young and promising engineers and developers.  They have shown their determination in putting technologies into good use to help people with disabilities, address city challenges and improve healthcare devices," said Arthur Jiang, vice president of sales for China in Arrow's components business in the Asia-Pacific region.  "We see initiatives like this serving as a platform to build a vibrant ecosystem of entrepreneurs and innovators to help solve the IoT challenges of today and tomorrow."

 

"After months of tweaking and revising our design, we are thrilled to have stood out from the crowd to win this InnoDesign Contest," said Lu Bo, leader of the winning team.  "Not only will this platform help us immeasurably, we have also learned a great deal and have opened up deep discussions with different parties. This invaluable experience is far more important than the result, and we highly appreciate this opportunity."

 

Creative ideas from the top three winning teams include:

  • A navigational system powered by radar technology designed to help blind people overcome mobility challenges
  • A solar-powered and radar-based technology that can detect flooding incidents and issue warning alerts via a smartphone app
  • A non-invasive and portable medical device that can provide pulse wave velocity information for detecting artery condition
